On first glance, it may not be so obvious, but jobs available to law graduates are not just restricted to the more traditional positions of Barrister or Solicitor. From an employer’s point of view, a law degree is an asset in many fields outside of law itself. The reason for this is that law students develop a strong skill set in verbal and written communication, research and analysis, problem-solving, and in handling large amounts of complex information.
As such, attaining a law degree provides a strong foundation for business in general. It comes as no surprise then, that a recent survey conducted by the University of Northumbria has found that aside from entering into the legal profession, many legal graduate jobs are found in the fields of finance, administration and management.
Once they have their degrees, law graduates who are planning to train in the more traditional areas of the legal profession usually have to obtain practical experience as paralegals, legal assistants, or summer students prior to securing a training contract or a pupillage.
It is prudent for law students planning to train in the legal field post graduation, to attain employment in the field during their academic careers as a delay in obtaining this experience hampers finding a position post graduation. Legal graduate jobs within the legal field itself are very competitive. In addition to a sound academic career and practical training, a professional looking CV is a must.
